Café Delta, Hotel Delta, Centre ville Montréal

COMPETITION ENTRY. This is our entry to the Montreal Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce “I love working downtown” design competition. The site is the garden of the Delta Hotel on the corner of Sherbrooke ave and City Councillors St. The hotel Delta was originally designed to be an apartment complex and the garden was to be the grand entry off of Sherbrooke. However, when it became a hotel the requirements for a larger lobby meant that the primary entrance was switched to President Kennedy avenue one street below, and subsequently the garden was forgotten and neglected. What we proposed for the design was to re-open the garden and to install a café inside of it so that it could finally be reopened to the public and enjoyed. The café structure used the old concrete base of the fountain from when it was the apartment buildings entrance. Seating pods were added in the existing planters so that people could enjoy the incredible mature trees that have grown up, unseen, for years. A rooftop terrace on the café allows for people walking along the street to have a hint that something special is happening inside of this walled in garden.
